As a teacher and a parent, I spend a lot of my day talking. I also happen to be a loquacious individual, so my career matches my personality.
However, I’ve been thinking a lot about words. We read a great book today that discussed how word makers have had such a profound effect on people. It made me ponder all of the words I say (and now write)
What kind of words will my students or my children hear? What did they hear today?
They will probably hear a lot of the usual-
“Hands to self”
“Be mindful of your body”
“Respect the personal space of yourself and others”
“Voices off”
“Turn and talk”
“You have a choice”
But the most important words are-
“We missed you”
“I’m so happy you’re here”
“Welcome”
“You are so thoughtful”
“Come as you are”
“You matter”
“You ARE good enough”
Yes- I say a lot of words in a day and while I would like the kids to listen to all of them, I hope they remember the ones that are most important.
As teachers, your list of words you say rings true. You reminded me how much more I need to compliment/encourage my students.
