This morning began with a 7:15 am wake-up call in a king sized bed fit for a queen… and B of course. I felt my body tense up at the sound of the alarm for the first time in over a week. I dragged my bare feet across the silky sheets and opened my eyes to the New York City sunrise peeking through the curtains of the sliding glass door to our balcony.
Three mornings prior, my eyes were met by the sunrise in Nassau, Bahamas. I truly believed that there was no way this was reality, or at the very least, my reality. How could a sight be so pure and beautiful? The turquoise water glistened as it stretched beyond what my eyes could see. I longed to feel the sun kiss my skin. Not even the clouds looked real as they danced in the sky in front of me. I took a picture so I could capture and remember the real beauty that was right in front of me.
Around 1:00 pm this afternoon, the suitcases in the trunk of B’s dad’s pickup truck clanked in the trunk. I smiled as we pulled up to our little yellow house. Waiting on the other side of the sliding glass door forour arrival was not the New York City or Nassau sunrise. Instead, it was two little blue eyes and white fur covered with splotches of grey and white that matched the slush on our Pennsylvania driveway.
Sliding glass doors give us a clear picture of what’s on the other side. Whether it’s a busy city or dreamlike oasis, it’ll never match the same feeling as what home does.
