Friday the 13th

Day 13 of the March Slice of Life Challenge hosted by the Two Writing Teachers! #SOL26

Friday the 13th makes me think of my gram. Weird, right? Let me explain. I grew up in a split household. I spent two weeks living with my mom, and then packed-up and went to live with my dad for two weeks. Two weeks at one house. Then two weeks at the other. Two weeks with my mom. Two weeks with my dad. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Although, this is really a slice for another time.

When I was with my dad, we spent a lot of time at my grandparent’s house. My siblings and I were very close to our gram and we loved spending the night at her house. Spending the night at my gram’s house usually meant a trip to the local video rental store, where she would let us rent anything we wanted–including scary movies. Scary movies were a hard no for our mom (and for valid reasons). My siblings and I took advantage of this opportunity and would occasionally rent the forbidden movies.

Yeah. I wish I could say that they didn’t give us nightmares or that we learned our lesson and never rented a scary movie again. They did and we didn’t. Maybe this is why I no longer like to watch scary movies?

  1. Watching scary movies as a child gave us nightmares. I remember we talked about the characters often. Living on my own now, I can never watch a scary movie.
