Jumping Spiders… Eek? Or Awe?

Day 3 of the March Slice of Life Challenge hosted by the Two Writing Teachers! #SOL26

Does your daughter want
a jumping spider as a pet?
Mine does.
She did all the research
She answered all the questions
She made an effort to be more responsible

She says
They’re easy to take care of
And require very little space
That they are insanely curious
And explorative
And their venom is mild,
So it won’t hurt you if they bite
If they bite… eek?

She says
Jumping spiders make a great pet
They’re cute
And she loves their eyes
They have eight eyes you know
Their eyes are expressive she says
She calls them spoods
Which is an affection term for spiders
She says she will name him
Holster

Does your daughter want
a jumping spider as a pet?
Mine does.

Did I mention I’m afraid of spiders?
Did I mention that I did my own research?
“Never purchase a jumping spider from a pet store chain. Females could be gravid (pregnant), which could lead to a sudden overwhelming number of spiderlings.” Um… WHAT?!

Did I mention that I made a compromise?
1) A male jumping spider will be purchased from a breeder (NO BABIES).
2)Her father and I will help her purchase/maintain supplies for said spider.
3) She is 100% responsible for it and it lives in her room.
4) AND if it escapes… game over.

  1. Loved reading about your daughter and her love for jumping spiders, but it would not be on my pet list! She might have fun reading the picturebook “Sophie’s Masterpiece: A Spider’s Tale” She should keep a journal… and maybe someday she could writing a series of picturebooks with her jumping spider as the main character, recounting their adventures… especially the ones they have when she introduces “him” to people. Hmmm… just a thought.

    1. We will have to check out the book you mentioned. I’m sure she would enjoy it. I love the idea of her journaling and turning her new pet into the main character a picture book. Jumping spiders are kind of cute… for a spider… and journaling about people’s reactions as they meet him will definitely be interesting! Thanks for stopping!

  2. Wow, I can’t wait to hear how it goes. Good that you did your own research. You captured you daughter’s determination and delight in getting a spider as a pet. Reminded me of the dad on Tiktok that got his kid a little octopus. He did not do the research and was quickly overrun with octopi. But his kid was so happy.
