Soggy Washcloth

Day 15 of the March Slice of Life Challenge hosted by the Two Writing Teachers! #SOL24

Why do little kids love to “help” wash the dishes? I have a vivid memory of myself at a young age, standing in my gram’s kitchen arguing with my older sister about whose turn it was to wash the dishes. Neither of us wanted to dry, we both wanted to wash.

There was a time when my oldest daughter begged me to wash the dishes. Determined to help, she would pull the wooden kitchen chair across the kitchen floor and over to the sink. Now, dishes are no longer a novelty.

Here is a snippet of a slice from 2016 of 3-year-old Amelia helping me wash the dishes in a slice called, Soggy Washcloth:

“Momma! I want to help! I want to help you wash the dishes!” Amelia began to push the wooden kitchen chair from the table over towards the sink.
“Okay, Amelia. I would love to have your help. Do you need help with the chair?”
“No, I can do it,” Amelia replies, as she catches the chair on the seam where the hardwood floor meets the tile in the kitchen, almost flipping her over the chair.
“How about I help you,” I smile, as I pull the chair the rest of the way over to the kitchen sink.
Amelia happily climbs on and puts her hands into the soapy water, searching for the washcloth I had just thrown in. I go over to the drawer and pull out a second washcloth. Then place it into the dishwater.
“Can I clean this?” Amelia asks as she dumps water all over the chair from the cup she grabbed from the sink.

I am forever grateful for slices like these… slices that capture my children at various moments in time.

Here is a picture of me and my pap washing dishes together at the kitchen sink.

  1. I was just thinking about this act of washing dishes last week because I remember my mother telling me that her mother would have my aunt and my mom recite poetry and sing songs all the way through the task of washing dishes. My mom can remember quite a myriad of poetry because of this practice.

  2. I love this part of slicing too — the memories!!! This slice made me think about dinner at my grandma’s house… and all my aunts and uncles doing the dishes together.. washing, drying, putting away. I remember the first time they let me dry the silverware.. and that I didn’t do it quite their way…. LOL
