Silent Challenge

Day 14 of the March Slice of Life Challenge hosted by the Two Writing Teachers! #SOL24

I received a hysterical multi-paragraph email with screenshots included from a former student today. He had written to let me know that after a year and a half of practicing and dozens of hours of typing, he had finally beat my wpm and accuracy score on monkeytype.com. He wrote that he no longer had to live under the “tyranny of my 5th grade teacher.” HAHA! Have I shared how much I love this age group’s sense of humor?

Who knew that when I shared my wpm score during a morning letter, that I had ignited a silent typing challenge between the two of us. I sure didn’t, at least not until he submitted his end of the year letter. He shared that I had been a worthy opponent. “It was a close battle in terms of typing speed, and the final gap was 7 wpm. Although I did get one thing out of it: I now type 105 wpm. You were a fantastic teacher. Good game.”

His email made me think back to last year and all of the phenomenal writing pieces he had crafted. His pieces were packed full of humor and wit, making your mouth drop, while at the same time keeping you on the edge of your seat. Future author? Maybe…

Tomorrow, a little golden trophy will be delivered to him via my husband. One of the perks of having a husband who works at the middle school. Well done, J. Well done.

On another note, I may have used his email as inspiration to beat my old score… and his. Mission accomplished.
