I needed to submit my yearbook message today for my fifth graders. I thought it would make the perfect slice:
Dear 5th grade Cougars,
The 2020-2021 school year will be memorable for you for so many reasons: masks, six feet, Zoom, or Google Meet. I hope you focus on these reasons:
- You are resilient and incredible. No matter what the year threw at us, you always put your best foot forward.
- You made a difference. I will not forget your random acts of kindness and finding special messages throughout the building. The State College Food Bank is certainly grateful for your efforts. You set an example for others in the building.
- You are loved. You will always have teachers here at Corl Street who will be there for you if you need them.
You are going to rock middle school and you must promise to visit every now and then. I look forward to admiring your accomplishments for years to come.
Love,
Dr. Mark
Part of Slice of Life by Two Writing Teachers March Slice a Day Challenge! I’m slicing every day this month. Thanks for stopping by.
You were right- it is perfect!
I love the generalities backed by specifics (notes left, food drive…)
I hope they will look on this time as a time they proved their resilience. I know I will 🙂
And I hope they visit and regale you with their accomplishments!
PS_ I hope you will write another time, more about those notes left throughout the building. You piqued my interest.

I love this message! It helps to stay focused on what we have learned and what we can do, rather than all the things that we can’t do right now.
