Day 2 of the March Slice of Life Challenge hosted by the Two Writing Teachers! #SOL24
I happily joined a mini-poetry planning session with two friends a couple weeks ago. We oohed and awed over Grant Snider’s new book, Poetry Comics (you can snag your own copy at the end of this month). We shared ideas about ways we could incorporate and teach poetry in comic form–something we knew the doodlers of our class would love.
This week, in celebration of Black History month and Read Across America week, the humans of Room 212 kicked off this mini-unit with Kwame Alexander’s new title, Out of Wonder: Poems Celebrating Poets. This text is beautiful and pays tribute to twenty poets who have inspired Kwame Alexander and his co-authors, Chris Colderly and Marjory Wentworth. The images are equally as stunning and bring their words to life.
My students surpassed my expectations for this mini-unit. Their pieces are beautiful and fun and showcase their unique personalities.

Students created two pieces… one “Poetry is…” or “ABCs of Poetry…” piece and then they got to select a comic format that spoke to them.
Here’s my Saturday poetry comic! Enjoy!

GREAT idea. I am going to use this technique with my grad students this week. I love how it forces writers to be succinct.

Awesome! I hope they love it as much as my students did. 🙂

I love this! I team up with several community partners to bring writing and poetry workshops to our local coffee house, and this one looks like an idea we need to try. Today’s blog shares our Leap Day (February) night, and next month we have another local poet who will share his recently published book as well. I’m eager to see if perhaps our teenagers might like this idea. Thank you so much for sharing it.

I love this idea! My 5th graders have a graphic novel unit coming up in the spring, and this may be a perfect preview.
